4 Tips For Buying Used CNC Machines

Buying a used CNC machine is a very attractive idea. You can save a large amount of money vs. buying a new machine, and often you will find that the seller is willing to throw in tooling and accessories for free. Here are some tips for buying used CNC machines.

Tips for Buying Used CNC Machines

1. Be Informed

Buying a used machine usually requires more research than buying a new one. Stay alert and make a list of requirements for the machine you are going to purchase. Be aware of differences between similar models and years, and double check technical specs with the manufacturer when possible.

2. Inspect

Do not blindly believe everything the salesman or seller says. Check all the functions by actually carrying them out. If you are not knowledgeable enough to do it on your own, you can utilize the services of an experienced mechanic who could do it for you. Mechanical inspection consists of checking for free movement of all axes, spindle movement, tool alignment, abnormal noises, guides and so forth.

 3. Request Documentation

Try to get hold of as much documentation as you can, such as original bills, manuals and repair history. This will certainly help you in case you have problems at a later date.  It will also make it easier to order new parts or components since you know the detailed specification of each part. Don't forget documentation on included tooling and accessories.

4. Shop Around for the Best Deal

Shopping around physically or online may give more chance to get the best deal. If you are open to buying online you will have a much wider pool of machinery to choose from, but make sure you buy from a reputable source so that you get what you see.

You can find some of the best deals through online machinery auctions, particularly liqudation or court-ordered auctions. Many machinery auction websites, including Machine Tool Bids, offer some sort of guarantee or warranty to help mitigate the risk associated with these types of sales.
